Staring at a flashlight and seeing lines?
I use to have a reading light with a very tiny, bright light bulb. If i turned it on in a dark room, and I moved the light very fast, a streak of light would be 'branded' in my vision for a while. Its the same thign that happens when you accidently look at the sun..you get that black spot. Well, I could do this with a flashlight, but it would be a line of light instead.
My question is, when I did this, why did the line appear to be moving 'towards' or 'away' from me? I could turn off all the lights, flip the light on, and pretend to 'dodge' these lines. In pure darkness, it looked like a purple blade was comming after me! (it was bad for my vision, but iwas fun!)
you see the lines due to the receptors in your retina being overloaded by the brightness of the light, it only lasts for a few seconds but it stands out clearly due to the dark room.
why you see the lines as coming towards you or going away I'm not sure, unless you were moving your hand (and the torch) slightly back and forth as you were waving it about.
The lines receeding could be an illusion as we associate dimming things with things receeding from us
