Not knowing your age, here are some things to keep in mind.

There are thousands of high schools with really good players. Many hope (in their darkest minds) that they can make it into the NBA. If there are two seniors for every high school team, that's about 30,000 seniors trying for a scholarship at one of the 300 Division I basketball programs. Assuming 3 scholarships at each, that is a 1/30 of all basketball seniors get a division one scholarship, almost none of them in the top eschelon.

All kids who get a division one scholarship hope to play in the NBA. There are over 300 division 1 basketball schools (and many more in Division II and Division III). That means that, every year, there are approximately 600 seniors. Of these, 46 get drafted (rest are foreigners ... including here the early draftees as seniors). So ... you have, statistically speaking, 46/30,000 chance of making it to the NBA, assuming everyone is equally good.

I was speaking to a local college coach (good Division III program), and asked him whether he would prefer a player who was really strong with fundamentals and a good basketball sense, or a great athlete. He answered, immediately, that the athlete wins every time. He believes he can mold a great athlete, but cannot teach athletecism.

Having said all this, there is nothing wrong with a dream. Work hard, do best, play alot. But have a backup plan. Some of the best players in the world never make it to the NBA. But get a good education and you may find something that you like almost as much. And even then, coaching is a possibility.

Good luck. I would never tell a kid that they have no chance to make it to the NBA. But I would tell even the best player in the state that, every year, there are 50 best players in the state nationwide, and most of them never make it to the NBA. Are you the best player in your state? Probably not. But even if you are, the odds are stacked against you so much that a backup plan would be a really good idea.

Good Luck
