Wondering what to look out for when buying a pair of winter boots? Look no further than this space for boot shopping assistance.

To kick off, always try on a pair of boots before purchasing. Check for the big toe as it needs to touch the front of the boot – if a boot is too small rather than too big, this is preferable.

Next, consider how the boot feels when the knees are bent in the stance of the skier. If your toes are able to move slightly to the front of the boot, this is good but remember, too much room in the boot is a definite ‘no-no’!

Thirdly, think about the places where pressure is felt between your boot and your skin. The shin front, the arch, the heel, ankle and ball of your foot all need to feel comfortable when trying on the boot. Any resistance or irritation in these points will only feel worse when actually skiing.

The fourth point is to check out the heel of your foot. If your heel is able to lift too much the boot has too much room and you should reconsider buying this item.

The fifth point is a re-iteration of my immediate point. Do not buy your kids winter boots or your own winter boots for that matter in a hurry! Mistakes can be made between trying on the boot in the shop and getting home and you need time to exchange the product and go through the trying on process from stage 1. Two or three weeks ought to be sufficient to allow you to get used to wearing your boots (remember to stay on the carpet and avoid scuffing at all costs or else the shop assistant may not be too helpful in providing a refund!)

Sixth point, bear in mind that boots shops may not take back a pair of boots that have been custom fitted via heat moulding etc.

When purchasing boots, it is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. We all have different foot sizes, which is why we have to be able to purchase a pair of boots with confidence. When purchasing kids winter boots, take your time and consider these points and you won’t go too far wrong!
